SESSION ONE — IMPROVING MUTUAL PERCEPTION THROUGH THE MEDIA

An important goal of this session was to convey the diversity within each tradition and to dispel misperceptions. As the media in both the Muslim world and the West exercise enormous influence in disseminating perceptions to the masses, participants engaged in developing a strategy to promote better understanding between Muslims and the West through the media.

FEBRUARY 11, 2006 (SATURDAY): SESSION THREE — THE CHALLENGES POSED BY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TO THE MUSLIM-WESTERN RELATIONSHIP

There have been amazing transnational developments in information technology and in biotechnology, which may reinforce feelings of powerlessness among those who have not benefited. This session explored the challenges these developments posed for governments, societies, and traditional authorities as well as for the ordinary citizen.

During this session participants considered the policy implications that emerged throughout the various conference sessions, including future directions for American and Western policy in general toward the Islamic world and the importance of formal mechanisms for dialogue in resolving conflicts.
