Granada. The conference of Dialogues: Islamic World – U.S. - The West has served to create a general base of thought which we can use to consider controversial political issues like an eventual war on Iraq, or permanent conflicts such as the one between Palestine and Israel. "In order to thoroughly analyze the situation in Iraq or Israel and Palestine, we would have needed a year, not four days."

The Dialogues conference, which King Juan Carlos I could not attend because of his crowded agenda, commenced on the 28th of October and concluded on Thursday. The conference's major conclusion was that "the clash of civilizations myth must be destroyed." Participants added that it is incorrect to consider the situation in the framework of "Islam versus the West." "The Islamic World is very large and complex, and it is made up of many distinct cultures. We cannot return to the idea of the Cold War between the U.S. and the USSR and we cannot replace the Reds with the Greens."

Analysts at the conference highlighted the need for the media to play a new role by abandoning stereotypes and substituting them with concrete realities. "The media," indicated Mustapha Tlili, "creates public perceptions. The media is sometimes much more powerful than politicians themselves."
